 Why study Photography?
Photography is exciting. Great photographs combine a number of skills, but the key is good composition and an ever-attentive eye regardless of what camera you have. The course develops practical and transferrable skills. Students will learn how to read visual language and gain a greater understanding of the visual world around them. Students are encouraged to nurture their creativity whilst gaining skills in digital photography, traditional techniques and the moving image. Photographer Ansel Adams once said ‘You don’t take a photograph, you make it’ this course will teach you how to do this.
What is the course content?
This is a contemporary course supported by the history of photography and visual culture. Students are encouraged to think critically about photography and its impact on society. Analysing and evaluating photographic work is a key requirement of this course.
Students will be taught technical skills to help them develop into confident and competent photographers. They will learn how to use digital SLR cameras within the photography department, they will be introduced to composition techniques and rules, editing, exposure, light, lenses but most importantly seeing. Students will have support to establish original ideas, to develop engaging outcomes and to confidently analyse photographic work.
The photography/art facilities are available to students outside of their scheduled lessons. It is expected that student’s complete work in their own time, following on from lessons, set tasks or work that develops from their personal line of enquiry.
There will be opportunities to hear photographers, artists and local colleges talk about their work and further education opportunities. There will be visits to art/photography galleries, studios and exhibitions.
It is preferable that students own or have access to a digital SLR camera and it is an advantage if students have studied Photography or Art and Design for GCSE but it is not essential. Enthusiasm, passion and commitment are necessary attributes. For students wishing to study further a portfolio of work is usually required.
